Automation: robot grippers and control cabinets that fit into an existing line

End-of-arm tooling for industrial robots, synchronisation mechanisms, add-on parts for an existing assembly, and control cabinets with manufacturer device models in 3D. Minimal changes to someone else's design, drawings to DIN-ISO or DSTU.

WHEN YOU NEED IT

When automation needs a fix

CASES

In a bag gripper for an ABB IRB 460 the jaws were driven by two independent pneumatic cylinders and could drift apart. I tied the jaws mechanically with a rack and pinion without touching the frame, jaws or cylinders.

Automation rarely starts from a blank sheet. So I work with the customer's existing assembly: new parts use holes that are easy to add and the fasteners already in place.

explained

The updated assembly with the new mechanism and a stroke check over the full range.

Part drawings to DIN-ISO or DSTU: sheet parts with DIN 6935 flat patterns, welded parts with ISO 2553 weld symbols.

Images explaining the solution, so the line engineer can approve it in minutes.

PROCESS

How I do it

DWG-2114
METHOD
5 STEPS

The existing assembly and loads first, then the simplest mechanism, and only then drawings.

01

Review the existing assembly: what moves, what is fixed and where there is space

02

Find the simplest mechanism: in the gripper, one idler pinion and two racks

03

Check the stroke at 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 105 mm with no collisions with the frame or cylinders

04

Size for the worst case: one Ø25 cylinder at 6 bar drives both jaws, about 295 N per tooth

05

Issue drawings of the new parts and explanatory images

CONSTRAINTS

A tooling mistake stops the line, so these are checked on the model.

Worst case. If one actuator fails, the other drives both jaws through the gear mesh. The tooth (about 21 MPa) and the axle (up to 590 N) are sized for it.

Collisions over the stroke. Racks must clear the frame, cylinders and fingers at every point, and turning the pinion the wrong way must produce interference, which is checked too.

Minimal changes. New parts use the existing DIN 912 M6 fasteners, and the mirrored jaw gets its rack automatically because it is the same part.

Devices in the cabinet. A motor-operated breaker turned out 284 mm deep instead of 225: that only shows up in 3D from manufacturer models.

The gripper and the control cabinet differ in nature, but the principle is the same: real components, checks on the model and minimal changes to what already works.

I can take just the mechanism, or just drawings of the new parts for your assembly.

QUESTIONS

FAQ

Yes. The ABB IRB 460 gripper was improved exactly that way: the synchronisation mechanism went into the existing assembly without reworking the frame, jaws or cylinders.
The case uses an ABB IRB 460 palletising robot. The approach does not depend on the brand: what matters is the flange, payload and the geometry of the part being gripped.
DIN-ISO if the line documentation uses it, or DSTU. Sheet parts with DIN 6935 flat patterns, welds to ISO 2553.
Yes, with manufacturer device models in 3D, schematics and connection tables. Example: a transformer cooling control cabinet.
