3D modeling — the model your drawings are made from

A paper sketch, a photo of a sample or a few sentences of description become a parametric SolidWorks model. It is ready for production drawings, strength analysis and rendering straight away — nothing has to be redrawn.

WHEN YOU NEED IT

When you need a model

CASES

The model is the first stage, and everything after it depends on it. If it has no mates, the drawings have to be fixed by hand after every change. If it ignores stock sizes, the shop substitutes its own section — and the assembly dimensions no longer add up.

So the model is built for production from the start: real thicknesses, standard sections and fasteners that exist in a catalogue, not only in the CAD library.

Native SolidWorks files with a clean feature tree: fully defined sketches, named features, dimensions linked to each other. Another engineer can open the model a year later and understand how to change it.

Together with the model you get the mass and centre of gravity (which matters for brackets, supports and anything that can tip over), a list of standard components, and a STEP file for anyone on a different CAD.

PROCESS

How I do it

DWG-214
METHOD
5 STEPS

The model is built top-down: overall envelope and mounting points first, then the parts — so changing one dimension rebuilds the structure instead of breaking it.

01

I work out the purpose, loads, operating conditions and manufacturing constraints

02

I build the assembly skeleton: envelope, axes, attachment points to existing parts

03

I model the parts using available stock sizes and with manufacturability in mind

04

I assemble the sub-assemblies with mates and check interference, mass and centre of gravity

05

I send the model for approval as screenshots, STEP or a render — whichever suits you

PRODUCTION CONSTRAINTS

What the model has to know about the shop

CONSTRAINTS
4 ITEMS

A good-looking model can be drawn in an evening. A model that becomes a product without rework accounts for things you cannot see on screen.

Stock sizes. A 40×40×2 box section is in every steel stockist; 45×45 is not. A non-standard section gets swapped on the shop floor, and every dimension tied to it moves.

Clearances for welding and coating. Powder coat adds 60–120 µm to every surface, hot-dip galvanizing even more. A fit that is perfect in CAD does not assemble after finishing.

Parametrics for product families. If a product comes in several sizes — like the six monkey bar variants in the portfolio — one model with configurations is cheaper to maintain than six separate ones.

Fasteners. A bolt you cannot buy, or a nut no spanner can reach, is a classic reason for calls from the installation crew. Every fastener is checked for tool access.

All 43 projects in the portfolio started as a model. Most of them then went into production using drawings made from that same model.

TIMING AND FORMAT

Timing and how we work

DWG-217
TERMS

A simple part or small sub-assembly takes 3–5 days. An assembly of a few dozen items starts at a week. With a full drawing package on top, the whole job is 2–3 weeks.

You can order the model on its own, without drawings — model and documentation are separate stages.

FAQ
4 Q
Yes, if the photo shows the shape and at least one dimension is known. The rest I derive from proportions, and the critical ones I confirm with you or send you a short list of what to measure.
Yes. SLDPRT and SLDASM with the full feature tree, not dead imported bodies. Plus STEP, IGES or STL if you need them.
Yes. That is the simplest case: the dimensions exist, and the job is to build a correct parametric model from them and find the places where the drawing contradicts itself.
Yes. It is built with real thicknesses and materials from the start, so strength analysis runs on the same model without redrawing anything.
