STRILA RL-1: a drone I designed from shell to wiring

A printable airframe, a servo-driven camera tilt mechanism, and layout and wiring of all electronics from real components. The model is built so you can print, solder and fly from it.

THE BRIEF

What had to be delivered

DWG-381
BRIEF
RL-1 · 2026

A tail-sitter quadcopter: an axisymmetric body with a nose cone, four motors on arms, a camera with a tilt drive and a bay for an exchangeable payload.

My part: a printable airframe, the camera mechanism and complete wiring, checked for interference, mass, thrust and current, so it is assembled from the model rather than fitted on the bench.

VERSION 2

STRILA RL-2: from the real build

REVISION
RL-2 · 2026

The printed and assembled version is RL-1. From the client's build videos I carried every change back into the model and released RL-2: the same layout, but every part is fastened the way it is actually assembled.

01

A universal 9-gram servo pocket: SG90, MG90S and clones, height set by 1.0 and 0.5 mm shims

02

Everything on threads: M3 screws in ⌀2.7 holes, M2 and M2.5 only where a bought-in part dictates the size; the carbon frame is unchanged, wing screws moved to lugs outside the carbon

03

Receiver in a pocket under a lid, GPS under a lid, antenna clips, a capacitor bracket under the stack screws

04

Model audit: 73 screws correct, 136 holes with none extra, 0 floating bodies, only intended contacts

05

For printing: 26 STL files, a print map, a DXF of the carbon plate and an 18-sheet change summary with sections

ENGINEERING CONSTRAINT

What made it non-trivial

DWG-382
CONSTRAINTS
4 ITEMS

A 430 mm body has to hold the flight stack, a 6S battery, the video transmitter, GPS and the camera mechanism.

Dense packaging. The flight controller and ESC stack sits under the carbon plate, the battery stands upright above it, and the harnesses run in the gaps between battery and bay wall.

A camera that turns 90°. The DJI O3 camera tilts on a servo through an m0.5 z20/z40 gear pair and, in working position, comes out through a slot in the nose.

Printed, not moulded. PETG shells, PA12-CF for loaded parts, TPU sleeves, threads via brass heat-set inserts. Every part is designed for its print orientation.

Current. Up to 160…180 A at full throttle: the XT60 connector proved marginal, so the wiring specifies XT90 and 10 AWG power leads.

SOLUTION

How I solved it

DWG-383
METHOD
5 STEPS

Real components from datasheets first, then the airframe around them, and only then a check of everything together.

01

SpeedyBee F405 V4 + BLS 55A stack, ELRS receiver, M10Q GPS with compass, DJI O3, EMAX ES08MA II servo, 6S 5200 battery

02

Arms with channels for the motor leads, BrotherHobby SE3115 900KV motors with 9 × 5 props

03

Camera drive: PA12-CF tilt frame, Ø3 shaft on two MR63ZZ bearings, POM gears

04

Pin-to-pin wiring table with length and gauge for every wire

05

Checks: interference of 101 new parts against 273 model bodies, mass, thrust, current and voltage drop

PETG shells (3 perimeters, 15…25 % gyroid), PA12-CF for loaded parts, TPU 95A damping, a carbon plate under the stack, M2 and M2.5 brass heat-set inserts for ISO 7380 and ISO 4762 screws.

Take-off mass 2.6 to 3.3 kg depending on infill; thrust-to-weight 3.4…4.5; 55 A per channel ESC with more than 20 % margin.

The drone exists as a complete digital assembly: printed parts, bought components, fasteners and wires in place. Before the first print it is known how much it weighs, how much it pulls and where the bottlenecks are.

Open points are recorded honestly: harness disconnects at the section joint and the XT90 change are the next step.
