Fusion 360 design: from a sketch, photo or video to a model the product is made from

Fusion 360 is my main tool today. Parametric models and assemblies for manufacturing, mechanism kinematics, parts for 3D printing and sheet metal, drawings to ISO or DSTU from the same model. I work from a sketch, photos, a video or your STEP.

WHEN YOU NEED IT

CASES

In Fusion 360 the model, mechanism positions, sheet metal, flat patterns and drawings live in one file. That is why all 10 projects of the latest portfolio wave, from an aerial-platform boom to switchgear cabinets, were built in it.

My CSWP certificate is for SolidWorks and I work there too: if your workshop runs SolidWorks, you get native files, not a conversion.

A parametric model with a feature tree: change a dimension and the assembly rebuilds without manual patching.

An assembly with bought-in parts from manufacturer STEP files: Schneider breakers, threaded fasteners, Nord-Lock washers, as in the switchgear cabinets and the KD304 housing.

Drawings, a bill of materials and flat patterns from the same model, so the sheet never drifts from the 3D. KeyShot renders and a browser 3D viewer link when needed.

PROCESS

How I do it

DWG-2154
METHOD
5 STEPS

One master geometry everything else is built from: the model, mechanism positions, drawings and renders.

01

Take the geometry from a sketch, photos, a video or your STEP and fix the key dimensions

02

Build a parametric model and assembly with real bought-in parts from manufacturer STEP files

03

For mechanisms, define the positions and check interferences in each, as in the AP17 boom and the KD304 housing

04

Run repeat products through a Fusion 360 API script: change the data and the model and drawings rebuild themselves

05

Issue F3D, STEP, STL or DXF, drawings and renders from the same model

What the model catches before metal

CONSTRAINTS
5 ITEMS

The most expensive mistakes are found on the model, if the model is honest: real parts, real positions.

Device depth. In the ShR.KRUE cabinet a motor-operated breaker turned out 284 mm deep, not 225: it was found in 3D from the manufacturer's STEP, not at the factory.

Cable routes. A route check showed 5 × 95 cables had no path to the gland plate, so the cabinet was re-laid from the bottom up before manufacturing.

Every mechanism position. The AP17 boom is checked in transport, working and basket-rotation positions: 3 × 3500 mm extension, boom angle from −25° to 80°.

Tilt under vibration. The KD304 housing is checked in five tilt positions: 0 interferences, the pivot on an M8 screw with a pair of Nord-Lock washers.

Flat patterns from the model. The KD304 shroud 899.8 × 89.5 mm and cover 266 × 204.2 mm come from the sheet-metal model, not from hand calculation.

The boom, the cabinet and the housing differ in scale, but all three were built in Fusion 360 from the first line to the production files.

TERMS
·

A simple model takes 3 to 5 days, a model with a full drawing package 2 to 3 weeks. I give an exact estimate within 24 hours of the brief.

I can take part of the job: just the model, just drawings from your Fusion 360 model, or moving a model from SolidWorks to Fusion 360 or back.

FAQ
5 Q
Yes, Fusion 360 is my main tool today: the AP17 boom, the KD304 housing, the switchgear cabinets and the STRILA RL-2 drone were built in it. The model comes as F3D with a feature tree or as STEP.
Yes. The monitor inside the KD304 housing was modelled 1:1 from the customer's video, manual photos and 3D scans, because no drawings existed.
Yes, to ISO or DSTU: assembly drawings, part drawings, a bill of materials and flat patterns. For a cabinet series, 73 drawing sheets were produced from one generator together with the 3D.
Yes. The STRILA RL-2 drone body and the two-camera nose cone were modelled for PETG and PA12-CF printing: STL with a print map and an orientation set for every part.
Yes. I hold the CSWP and 7 more Dassault Systèmes certificates. If your workshop runs SolidWorks, you get native SolidWorks files, not a conversion.
