A boom that lifts people 21 metres up

A four-section telescopic boom with a work basket for a truck-mounted platform. From a sketch to a Fusion 360 model with kinematics, an EN 280 check and a concept the client can decide on before any drawings.

THE BRIEF

What had to be delivered

DWG-3141
BRIEF
AP17 · 2026

A new boom for an aerial platform on the slewing base of the client's truck: four sections, a cylinder in the first one pushing out the three smaller ones, and a two-person basket at the head. The client's reference: a white boom with a basket on a truck.

My job: design it for real fabrication, check every joint by calculation and present it so the client can decide before working drawings. After a call with the client the concept was reworked a second time: the section profile, a basket over the cab that slews, boarding from the ground.

4 ITEMS

Four steel sections weighing over two tonnes must extend in sync and carry people twenty metres up.

Four sections in one. The sections nest inside each other with a clearance and run on nylon slide pads. One cylinder inside the boom extends them, and chains pull the two smaller sections: a 3 × 3500 mm stroke with at least a third of each section's length left in overlap when extended.

The basket always stays level. The boom angle runs from −25° to 80°, the basket floor must stay level. Levelling is hydraulic, no electronics: a master cylinder on the column and an identical slave at the basket, ±0.4° error against the five degrees EN 280 allows.

Boarding from the ground without extending. The boom lowers to −21°, the basket floor ends up 0.68 m above ground, with a fold-down two-rung step under the gate. The gate opens inwards: EN 280 does not allow one that folds down.

Travel over the cab. Folded, the basket is raised to the underside of the boom and sits over the cab without blocking the windscreen. Heights assume a slewing ring 1.3 m above ground; they will be refined once the truck is measured.

SOLUTION

How I solved it

DWG-3143
METHOD
5 STEPS

One master geometry with pose matrices: the Fusion model, the clash checks and every diagram of the concept come from it.

01

Box sections from two press-braked halves welded on the neutral axis: 450×350×6, 394×314×5, 340×280×5 and 286×246×4 mm

02

Extension: a 100/63 cylinder with a 3500 mm stroke inside the boom and pairs of LH1244 and LH1044 leaf chains over plain sheaves; retraction is chained too, so a lowered boom cannot run out on its own

03

Luffing by a Ø160/100 cylinder with a 1000 mm stroke, Ø80 heel pin in bronze bushes

04

The 1300 × 700 basket on a bracket with a Ø60 axis slews ±50° with a lock; guard rail posts 40 × 40

05

Clash check in 27 boom poses and 27 basket slew poses: zero contacts

Sections in high-strength S355MC steel, basket guard in S235, PA6-G nylon slide pads with MoS2, 40Kh steel pins in bronze bushes. LH1244 and LH1044 leaf chains, as on forklifts, tensioned by two bolts.

Calculation to EN 280 for a mobile elevating work platform: two people plus 40 kg of tools, 12.5 m/s wind, 400 N manual force, a 150 % test load. All ten checks pass: sections, chains, cylinders, pins, guard rail, levelling, fatigue and clashes; the highest section utilisation is under 60 % against an 80 % criterion.

The client sees the boom in every position and understands every decision before paying for fabrication: what changed after the call, why chains and not a wire rope, and why the gate opens inwards.

The next step is measuring the truck. The column and flange are then fitted to the slewing ring, stability with outriggers is checked, and the generator produces working drawings from the same model.
