Defence hardware: from a drone airframe to a ground platform, ready to manufacture

3D-printed UAV airframes and frames, camera drives and payload bays, electric wheeled ground platforms, enclosures and mounts for electronics on vibrating vehicles. Real components from datasheets, with mass, thrust, current and interference checks before the first print or cut.

WHEN YOU NEED IT

When you need a design engineer

CASES

Defence hardware fails at the interfaces: the battery does not fit the bay, a harness chafes, a connector is marginal on current, a part will not print in the right orientation. So I first assemble the product from real components out of datasheets, and only then build the body around them.

I work from whatever exists: a sketch, photos, short videos from assembly. That is how the STRILA RL-2 model got every fix the customer saw on the assembled RL-1.

and wiring

An assembly with every bought-in component, screw and heat-set insert: you see how the product goes together.

Production files: STL with a print map, DXF for carbon plates and sheet parts, drawings with sections.

A pin-to-pin wiring table with wire lengths and gauges, plus current, mass and thrust checks.

PROCESS

How I do it

DWG-284
METHOD
5 STEPS

Real components first, then the body around them, and only then a check of everything together.

01

Collect the component list: stack, motors, battery, camera, receiver and GPS, or the platform motors and controllers

02

Place datasheet components into the assembly and lay out bays, wire channels and ventilation

03

Build the body for the process: PETG and PA12-CF printing, laser-cut and bent sheet, CNC-cut carbon

04

Check interferences, mass, thrust, currents and voltage drop, and the print orientation of every part

05

Issue print and cutting files, drawings, the wiring table and a change summary

PRODUCTION CONSTRAINTS

What to check before manufacturing

DWG-285
CONSTRAINTS
5 ITEMS

Mistakes in defence hardware show up in the field, so these are checked on the model.

Currents. STRILA draws up to 160…180 A at full power: XT60 turned out to be marginal, so the wiring uses XT90 and 10 AWG power leads.

Printing, not moulding. Shells in PETG, loaded parts in PA12-CF, TPU bushings, threads in brass heat-set inserts. Every part is designed for its own print orientation.

Tight packaging. A 430 mm body holds the stack, a 6S battery, the video transmitter, GPS and the camera drive, and the harnesses run in gaps defined in the model.

Heat and dust. The wheeled platform carries two batteries and two 70 A controllers: 80 × 80 fans move the heat out through a filter without opening the body to dust.

Vibration. On constantly vibrating vehicles the fasteners rely on Nord-Lock washers and pressed-in PEM nuts, as in the KD304 display housing.

The drone, the platform and the housing differ in scale, but the method is the same: real components, an interference-free assembly and files the product is made from without fitting on site.

I give a time estimate within 24 hours of receiving the brief, a sketch or a prototype video.

I can take just part of the job: the printed body, the camera drive, the wiring or the platform frame.

FAQ

3D-printed UAV airframes and frames, camera drives and payload bays, nose cones, electric wheeled ground platforms, enclosures and mounts for electronics on vibrating vehicles.
Yes. STRILA RL-2 was made exactly that way: every fix from the RL-1 assembly videos went into the model, and each part is fastened the way it is actually assembled.
Shells in PETG, loaded parts in PA12-CF, damping in TPU, frames in carbon plate, threads in brass heat-set inserts. Material and print orientation are set for every part.
A STEP assembly, STL with a print map, DXF for carbon and sheet parts, drawings with sections, a pin-to-pin wiring table and a change summary.
Fusion 360 and SolidWorks. I hold CSWP and CSWA Additive Manufacturing certificates; wiring is built from real datasheets.
