The quality test for documentation is simple: how many questions does the shop ask after receiving it? None means the job is done. If the welder decides which weld to use and the installer decides the assembly order, the package is incomplete, however good the sheets look.

So the package contains not only what is “customary to draw” but everything a specific shop needs for a specific product.

Assembly drawing — the product with item numbers, overall and installation dimensions. Part drawings — every item on its own sheet with dimensions, tolerances and surface finish. Bill of materials — structure, grades and quantities; this is what the supplier orders steel from.

Where needed, a product passport and installation manual — both are published in the portfolio for the basketball post and the football field fence.

Drawings are generated from the model, not alongside it. Change a dimension in the model and it changes on every sheet — the assembly and the part drawings can never disagree.

I find out who will build it — your shop, a subcontractor, an export customer — which sets the standard and the level of detail

I split the product into sub-assemblies the way it will actually be put together

I detail the parts: dimensions from datums, tolerances only where they matter

I add weld symbols, finishes and marking, and compile the bill of materials

I check the package through the shop's eyes: can the product be built from it without the model?

Dimensions on the sheet are half the job. The other half is how they are placed.

Dimensions from datums, not chained. Chain dimensioning accumulates error: ten holes at ±0.5 mm each can leave the last one 5 mm out. Dimensioning from one datum does not.

Tolerances where they count. A tolerance on every dimension does not raise quality — it raises cost and slows the shop. Precision goes where the part mates with something: fits and fastener holes.

Welds are specified. Type, leg size, length, side. Without that every welder welds their own way, and two identical structures come out of the shop different.

Coating is designed in. Vent and drain holes for hot-dip galvanizing, hanging points for powder coating. Otherwise the shop drills them wherever it can.

A model plus a full drawing package takes 2–3 weeks. If the model already exists, drawings are faster; I give an exact date once I have seen the model.

The bill of materials is part of the package, not sold separately, and its format follows your system.
