A backboard with a rim is a load at the end of a long lever. It has to go up and down, and in every position the post has to take the game.
Backboard overhang. The consoles carry the backboard far from the post: the product is 2535 mm long in plan and 1100 mm wide. The moment from the board's weight and ball impacts ends up in the post base.
Variable geometry. The height changes, but the board must stay vertical and free of play in every position.
Stability. A stability calculation was run and the counterweight optimised, so the post neither tips over nor weighs more than it needs to. Backboard overhang and shot dynamics were accounted for separately.
Outdoors. For sports equipment the main constraint is not strength but vandal resistance and safety: no sharp edges, fasteners that can't be undone with an ordinary spanner, margin for loads nobody planned.
