Design for manufacturing: find the problem before the shop does

You have drawings from another contractor and the shop refuses to work from them, or reworks every unit on site. I review the design through a production engineer's eyes and tell you exactly what drives the cost up and what will not assemble.

This happens more often than it should, and the cause is nearly always the same: the design was drawn without asking a production engineer. Hence sizes that are not in stock, welds in unreachable places and tolerances nobody needs but everyone pays for.

The good news is that at drawing stage it is cheap to fix. The bad news is that after the first batch it costs steel, time and reputation.

FIXCorrected
model — optional

A report in which every finding is tied to a specific sheet and item: what is wrong, why it is a problem for the shop and how to fix it. Findings are ranked by severity — from “will not assemble” to “could be cheaper”.

Then it is your choice: fix it yourself from the report, or I revise the model and reissue the documentation.

How I do it

DWG-264
METHOD
5 STEPS

The review follows the product's path through the shop: stock, bending, welding, coating, assembly, transport.

01

Stock: are the sections and sheets standard sizes, is the nesting efficient

02

Bending: radii, minimum flanges, holes near bend lines, correct flat patterns

03

Welding: weld access, symbols, distortion risk, sequence

04

Coating: galvanizing vent holes, hanging points for painting, fit clearances

05

Assembly and transport: tool access to fasteners, shipping dimensions, fastener standardisation

CONSTRAINTS
5 ITEMS

Typical findings — each looks minor on its own, and together they add up to that same on-site rework.

Non-standard sections. A tube the stockist does not carry, or a sheet of an unusual gauge. The shop swaps in the nearest size — and the assembly dimensions stop adding up.

Unnecessary tolerances. ±0.1 mm on a dimension where the part mates with nothing. It forces the shop to inspect every unit and gives the product nothing.

Too many unique parts. Ten nearly identical brackets that differ by a few millimetres. Reducing them to two or three sizes cuts both fabrication and stock-keeping costs.

Mixed fasteners. M8, M10 and M12 bolts in joints carrying the same load. The installer needs one spanner, not three.

Shipping dimensions. A structure that does not fit through the shop door or onto a truck has to be split into bolted site modules. If the model did not plan for that, it gets cut with an angle grinder on site.

The test I apply to my own drawings is the same one I apply to anyone else's: how many questions will the shop ask after receiving them? A DFM review is simply that test applied to someone else's work.

TERMS

I give a scope estimate within 24 hours of receiving the drawings or model. The review of a small product takes a few days; reissuing the documentation is quoted separately, after the report.

If the documentation is confidential, I will sign an NDA before you send it. I work with your template.

FAQ

Yes — this is one of the most common requests. I work out what is wrong and either correct the existing package or reissue it from a new model, whichever is cheaper.
A PDF is enough for the report. For corrections the model is better; if there is none, I build a new one from the drawings.
Yes, if you tell me what they are: available equipment, stock range, finishing method. A design built around your shop costs less than a universal one.
Yes. If the project is confidential I will sign an NDA before discussing details, using your template.
