Decor: carving, monuments and sculpted forms a CNC machine can actually cut

Carved architectural decor from historic drawings, entry monuments, sculpted forms and dimensional letters. Exact geometry for CNC, part breakdown, colour proofs and installation sheets, including in US units.

Ornament that craftsmen once carved by hand has to become geometry a CNC machine can cut. For that the architecture is built as exact BRep and the carving as separate meshes on top.

Every piece comes with sheets: dimensions, a visualisation with a human figure for scale, foundation or installation.

A visualisation with a human figure and installation sheets: footing, fixings, French cleats.

PROCESS

How I do it

DWG-2144
METHOD
5 STEPS

Scale and architecture first, then carving, and only then sheets from the same geometry.

01

Take scale from the drawing or from a photo by calibrating perspective

02

Build the architecture as exact BRep: casing, frieze, corbels, a cornice at 22.5°

03

Model the carving as separate meshes: rinceau, acanthus, rosettes, egg-and-dart, trimmed at the ends

04

Break the piece into parts for milling from foam or HDU

05

Generate sheets from the same geometry: dimensions, sections, installation

Decor looks great in a render, but it is made from parts, and that has to be built into the model.

Dimensions from a photo. The monument was rebuilt from a photograph: scale came from calibrating perspective on the logo ellipse, so the sheets say field verify.

Stone by stone. 406 stones in six colours are laid out individually rather than as one texture, so they can be counted and made.

The client's standard. For a US client the sheets are in inches, in production proof format with swatches, French cleat installation and a box for the engineer's stamp.

Material. Letters 3/4″ and 1/2″ in HDU, a Ø10″ medallion, and parts split so they can be milled and assembled.
