Furniture: cabinet and steel-frame, with hardware that will really hold

Wardrobes, shelving and steel-frame furniture: a model built from real Hettich and Blum hardware systems, lighting, sections for the workshop. Whatever in the brief cannot physically work is found before manufacturing.

In furniture two things in a brief often cannot physically work: an overlay no hinge provides, or a carcass that will not fit the niche assembled. The model shows it, and it is better found before manufacturing than at installation.

I build the model from real hardware systems out of catalogues, and drawing sections are cut from the model itself.

PROCESS

How I do it

DWG-2134
METHOD
5 STEPS

The niche and loads first, then catalogue hardware, and only then the carcass.

01

Take niche dimensions from measurements, drawings or photos

02

Choose hardware for weight and size: hinges, runners, lighting rails

03

Build the carcass from real thicknesses and joints: 45° mitres, hidden brackets, mounting plates

04

Check that it fits into place, that doors open, and the model for interference

05

Issue drawings with sections from the model and the hardware list

These are the most expensive furniture mistakes to fix, so they are caught in the model.

Door overlay. Hinges for an aluminium frame give 17 mm at most by the Hettich catalogue formula, so the 25 mm overlay in the brief was impossible. The doors overlap 14 mm and a metal angle covers the rest.

Fitting the niche. The carcass diagonal of 3037 mm exceeds the 3010 mm niche height, so the wardrobe is assembled in place and the top slides in from the front on mitres.

Heavy doors. A 2980 mm mirror leaf weighs 20.9 kg: six Sensys 8638i hinges per leaf and a mid-rail against bending.

Lighting without wires. Loox5 24 V rails in the sides and spring contacts in the shelves: a shelf can move to any height and still light up.

The wardrobe, the frame and the case show the same thing: furniture is an engineering task too, where loads, hardware and installation define the design.

FAQ

Yes. Wardrobe 3000 was designed for a 3010 mm niche: the model showed the assembled carcass would not fit, so it is assembled in place.
From manufacturer catalogues for weight and size: Hettich Sensys hinges, Blum TANDEM runners, Loox5 lighting rails. Part numbers go into the list.
Yes. For example, a 700 × 450 × 120 mm leg frame from 17 × 17 × 1 tube for a furniture piece.
